NYP Tristars is a junior triathlon club for children aged 8-16. Our aim is to introduce children to triathlon and teach them the skills required to enjoy the sport. Our swim sessions are aimed at developing front crawl technique and endurance. Our outdoor sessions focus on cycling, running and transition skills (the bit between the swim, bike and run). We run a club championship triathlon series (4 races).
We hold swimming training in the pool at Ripon Grammar School on Monday – Wednesday evenings during school term times and each child is allocated a 1 hour session on one of these evenings, based on ability. The youngest group has a 45 minute session. Between April and September, we hold outdoor training at Ripon Racecourse on Thursday evenings at 6.30pm.
Who can join?
Anyone aged 8-16 years (on 31st December of that year) can join – no prior experience of triathlon is necessary! We do, however, require potential members to take a (very relaxed) swim trial, just to check they can swim front crawl. The minimum requirement for a club trial is that each child can swim 200 meters of front crawl (no stopping) with their head in the water.
Membership fees are currently £25/month payable by standing order.
Initially children will need to buy very little – a swim suit and googles for swimming, a bike for the summer sessions and a full wetsuit if planning on open water swimming are all that is required. However, a set of fins would be useful for training, and your child may well find a trisuit and tri-belt useful if he/she wishes to compete. These are all available from many internet stores, although we do also sell NYP Tristars branded kit. (Click here to see the club kit)
